This may happen under the following circumstances:

Monitor has been just turned on and it is warming up.

Monitor periodically zeroes itself. Most units display ‘zeroing’ during this process.

Esophageal intubation

Accidental extubation

Apnea

Circuit disconnection

Cardiac arrest

Sampling tube disconnection.
